Fish Taco Toppings Board

This fish taco toppings spread will be your new go-to for Taco Tuesday–and every other day of the week! I used frozen fish sticks to make this board extra speedy (and kid-friendly!), but I also love to season and grill my fish for a more elevated, Baja-style experience. For added fun, whip up some Simple Margs (alcohol optional!) or serve with your favorite Mexican soda or lager.

Best Fish for Fish Tacos

I used fish sticks from the frozen section to make this super easy! If you want to go a fresher route, the best type of fish for tacos is white fish (like tilapia, halibut, cod, mahi mahi, etc). Try:

  • Grilled (halibut is great here for it’s texture, but you can also go for a fattier non-white fish:   tuna, salmon, and swordfish)
  • Battered and fried (cod and tilapia are best)
  • Oven roasting (perfect for big batches)
  • Ceviche (you could use shrimp here!)

Fish Taco Sauce Recipe

  • 3 tablespoons sour cream
  • 2 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon lime juice
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ to 1 teaspoon adobo sauce (I used the liquid from canned chipotle peppers in adobo sauce)

In a small bowl, combine sour cream, mayonnaise, lime juice, garlic powder, and adobo sauce (use more if you like things spicy!) until thoroughly combined.

What To Serve With Fish Tacos

When it comes to toppings, more is more! So here are some more of my favorite fish taco toppings to add to your board (or swap!).

  • Pickled red onions
  • Crumbled cotija cheese
  • Chipotle crema
  • Guacamole
  • Refried beans
  • Sliced jalapeños
  • Salsa (try corn, mango, peach, or pineapple for a touch of sweetness!)

How To Make Fish Tacos

  • Add the olives, pico, sour cream, and Taco Sauce to serving bowls and place on the board.
  • Fan the flour tortillas around the sour cream and the corn tortillas around the pico.
  • Add shredded lettuce, onions, and fish sticks in separate sections. Finish by garnishing with lime wedges, cilantro, and avocado.

Pro tip: If you’re serving this bar as an app, offer street taco-size tortillas for smaller portions!

Make It a Fish Taco Bowl

Some of your guests might prefer a bowl option! I love to make Mexican rice to serve on the side so guests can make a rice-based taco bowl. You could also serve lettuce, like iceberg, so guests can make a taco salad!

Just be sure to have plenty of bowls and forks if you go this route.

Fish Taco Flavors

I especially love fish tacos that have an identity! Sometimes that means leaning into authentic ingredients and seasonings, like with traditional Baja Fish Tacos, and sometimes it means fun cuisine fusions!

Alternative Taco Board Ideas

If you have any guests with different dietary needs, be sure to take that into consideration!

  • For gluten-free diets: Corn tortillas and big lettuce are great options, just be sure to keep them separate from any flour tortillas or other wheat-based ingredients.
  • For meatless diets: Serve tofu, jackfruit, portobello mushrooms, cauliflower or vegan fish sticks (yes, they make those!)
  • For dairy-free diets: Use cheese alternatives like cashew or tofu sour cream or vegan cheese crumbles
