TikTok is full of crazy trends, but making a candle out of butter was definitely something I had to try! The goal is to set it in the center of a crusty loaf of bread so it melts into a delicious, warm butter dip. Like my Butter Board, this butter candle is just another excuse to eat more butter. Despite being one of my most popular videos (and a cool party trick), I can’t say it’s the most practical recipe!
So, for other (read: more sensible) dip ideas, try my Butter Board, Whipped Brie Dip, Pimento Cheese, Whipped Goat Cheese, Whipped Feta, Whipped Cream Cheese, Blue Cheese Dip, Beer Cheese, and Whipped Burrata.
How To Make a Butter Candle
- 1 head roasted garlic (I used this recipe)
- 1 cup salted butter (2 sticks), at room temperature
- 1 loaf of fresh, crusty bread (I like Sourdough)
Directions
- Add the butter to the base of a blender and squeeze in the roasted garlic. Blend until smooth and thoroughly combined.
- Pierce a hole in the bottom of a plastic cup (like a Solo cup) and stick the wick through so that at least 1 inch is visible outside of the cup. Pour in the butter mixture then transfer to the fridge until set.
- Cut a hole, a little wider than a plastic cup into the top of your loaf for the butter candle to sit. You don’t want it to be too deep!
- Remove the cup from around the butter candle, place the candle in the center of the loaf, cut down the wick to about ½ inch, then light and let the butter melt!
- Once the butter has started to melt, rip off pieces of the loaf and dip in the butter. Enjoy!
Note: the candle take a while to warm and melt the butter, but you don’t want to leave it unattended or within reach of kiddos!

Do You Need an Edible Wick For Butter Candles?
No, you don’t! And if any wick claims to be edible, you probably shouldn’t eat it! What you do need is a food-safe wick, ideally made from organic hemp and beeswax one (like these). I highly recommend you do your own research about what’s safe for you to consume–be sure to read the fine print!.
I used 6-inch, but feel free to choose a different length depending on the size of your butter candle!
