If you’re on TikTok (or Instagram), you’ve probably already watched a video or two about the viral butter board trend. Some people are really against it, but I love butter just as much as I love cheese so I had to give it a try! Here, I layered delicious salted butter with sweet raw honey and beautiful edible flowers. Before you ask, I promise they really are edible (learn more in my Bridgerton Board post).

What Is a Butter Board?

Josh McFadden, an Oregon-based restaurateur and cookbook author, came up with the concept of the highly sharable butter board to make entertaining easier. This inspired Justine Doiron, of @justinesnacks, to create a viral butter board on TikTok, and for that we thank them both. It’s pretty much exactly what it sounds like: a board slathered with butter, but it’s so much more! Not only does it make the butter super soft and spreadable, but spreading it in a thin layer and adding delicious toppings makes it easier to get the perfect combo of flavors in every spread!

The best part? It’s super easy and even more tailorable to your tastes. See my favorite flavor combos below!

Butter Board Recipe

  • 1 cup salted butter (2 sticks), softened
  • Salt, to taste
  • Crostini, for serving (see my recipe here!)

Directions

  • Layer the butter in swirls on half of the board. If the butter isn’t as soft and spreadable as peanut butter, add it to a bowl first and stir it.
  • Add crostini to the other half of the board.
  • Sprinkle the butter with salt and drizzle with honey. Garnish with edible flowers.

Other Butter Board Ideas

Justine’s board had flakey salt, lemon zest, and edible flowers, but feel free to try out these other combos (or the ones in Justine’s post):

  • Roasted garlic, red pepper flakes, honey (or hot honey), and basil
  • Lemon zest, blueberry jam, salt, and honey
  • Dried cranberries, thyme, roasted pecans, and salt
  • Figs and balsamic glaze
  • Pickled onion, parsley, chives, and salt

Cleaning Up Your Butter Charcuterie Board

The easiest clean up method is to put a layer of parchment down on the board first so the butter isn’t directly on the board. You can secure the parchment with a dollop of butter!

If you don’t go the parchment route, follow Nicole Jacques cleaning instructions (video tutorial here). Start by removing excess butter from the board with the dull side of a butter knife (you can store leftovers in plastic wrap, but whatever you do DON’T PUT THE BUTTER DOWN THE SINK!). Halve a lemon, then sprinkle the board and one lemon half with salt. Use the salted half like a sponge and rub the salted board in circular motions squeezing as you scrub. Then rinse with warm water and wash and dry completely.
