Oven s’mores dip is the ultimate way to enjoy chocolate and marshmallows all year round! As someone who almost always has a hankering for s’mores, this easy dessert dip is one of my go-to sweets–especially when the weather isn’t nice enough to roast marshmallows over a fire.

To make indoor s’mores, all you need is an oven-proof skillet or baking dish and all the classic s’mores fixings! It’s a super easy treat to take and assemble anywhere you go, plus you can make it a really fun, kid-friendly activity.

As always, this dip is super customizable, so add your favorite mix-ins and/or themed sprinkles (think red, white, and blue for 4th of July and green and red for Christmas). You can even make savory S’mores!

S’mores: A Short History

S’mores were unsurprisingly created by the organization that is equally called to mind when you think of campfires and cookies: the Girls Scouts. The first official recipe for a S’More was published in the 1927 Girl Scout guidebook, Tramping and Trailing with the Girl Scouts. Credited to a troop leader named Loretta Scott Crew, the “Some More” calls for 16 graham crackers, eight bars of plain chocolate, and 16 marshmallows.

It’s a testament to this masterpiece that the recipe remains the same almost 100 years later, even down to toasting the marshmallows to a “crispy, gooey state.” Technically, S’Mores wasn’t always the name. Until sometime after 1971, the treats were referred to as a “Some More” for obvious reasons (hint: you’ll always be left wanting some more).

How To Make S’mores Indoors

Equipment

  • 1 10-inch cast iron pan

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • 18 ounces chocolate chips (about 3 cups)
  • 10 ounces large marshmallows
  • 1 (14.4-ounce) box graham crackers, halved

Note: If you want an even simpler version, swap the chocolate and marshmallows for Stuffed Puffs! The chocolate is already inside these marshmallows, which means one fewer ingredient.

Directions

  • Preheat oven to 450 degrees.
  • Warm the 10-Inch cast-iron skillet in the oven for about 5 minutes. Remove skillet from oven and add butter. Swirl until butter has melted and surface is evenly coated.
  • Add the chocolate chips to the skillet in an even layer. Top with the marshmallows, flat sides down, in a single layer. Bake until the marshmallows are browned and chocolate is melted, 7 to 10 minutes
  • Serve in the skillet with graham crackers on the side for dipping.

Tip: If the marshmallows aren’t quite as toasted as you’d like after 10 minutes, turn the oven to broil and move the skillet up to the top rack. Just be sure to keep an eye on it the entire time to prevent burning!

S’mores Skillet Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 450 degrees and gather ingredients.
  2. Warm the 10-Inch cast-iron skillet in the oven for about 5 minutes. Remove skillet from oven and add butter. Swirl until butter has melted and surface is evenly coated.
  1. Add the chocolate chips to the skillet in an even layer.
  2. Add the marshmallows flat sides down.
  1. Cover the chocolate completely with an even layer of marshmallows.
  2. Bake until the marshmallows are browned and chocolate is melted, 7 to 10 minutes. Serve in the skillet with graham crackers on the side for dipping.

Individual S’more Desserts

If you want to enjoy a S’mores dip without the party, I’ve got you! Make sure you have a 3.5-inch cast-iron skillet or ceramic ramekins.

  • You’ll only want to use enough butter to coat the skillet, so melt a tablespoon of butter and brush it into the warmed skillet(s) or ramekin(s). (Note: if you use ramekins put them on a rimmed sheet pan so you can easily remove them from the oven)
  • Only add enough chocolate to fill half of the skillet or a third of a ramekin (ramekins are deeper!). Too much chocolate will prevent it from melting!
  • Use mini marshmallows so you don’t have marshmallow goo melting into your oven!
  • Bake until toasted! Time will vary based on your vessel, so just keep an eye on the dip the whole time it’s in the oven.

How To Make S’mores in The Oven

S’mores Dip Vessel Variations

While cast-iron skillets are the ultimate tool for this dip because of their ability to retain and evenly distribute heat at high temperatures, there are other vessels you can use!

Ceramic

Ceramic dishes, like casseroles or classic square baking dishes, are great for consistency! They will work just as well as cast-iron when it comes to the cooking, but they won’t retain as much heat so your chocolate may cool faster.

Glass

Glass baking dishes are very similar to ceramic in terms of heat distribution, but they don’t hold the heat as well, so the dish will likely cool faster than you want it to.

Aluminum

Metal baking pans heat up and cool down a lot quicker than the others, which makes it less than ideal for melting chocolate that will stay gooey until the dipping is done! It’s even possible that the chocolate and marshmallows will heat too quickly and form a crust on the pan or burn.

S’mores Dip Beverage Pairings

I love to double down on the chocolate, but there are tons of complementary pairings for s’mores!

  • Hot Chocolate (and boozy hot chocolate)
  • Porter or stout beers
  • Espresso Martini (or plain ol’ coffee!)
  • Bourbons and whiskies
  • Rosé of Pinot Noir
  • Riesling
  • Port (especially great with peanut butter!)
