Pita and hummus is one of my favorite combinations, but hummus is incredibly versatile! This Middle Eastern dip, traditionally made with chickpeas, tahini, lemon juice, and garlic, is savory, creamy, and super delicious. You can use it as a spread for sandwiches, a topping on Mediterranean-inspired dishes, a base for salad dressings, or a snackable dip for fresh veggies (like this board)!
How to Make Hummus
Hummus is actually quite tricky to make at home, so I usually opt for store-bought! If you want to try making your own, give this hummus recipe from Cookie + Kate a shot.
Some tips for extra-smooth hummus, if you do decide to make it at home:
- Always cook your chickpeas, even if they’re canned
- Use baking soda in the water when soaking and boiling the beans
- Remove the skins from the chickpeas
- Use ice-cold water when blending
- Only use freshly squeezed lemon juice

Best Store-Bought Hummus
In my opinion, there is no one brand that shines above the rest–it all varies by what you’re looking for! Sometimes I want a smoother texture, and sometimes I want a flavor that other brands don’t sell. Just let your tastebuds lead the way! Here’s a hummus brand ranking article for help.
These are the brands I like best:
Pro tip: Fancy-up any store-bought hummus by adding it to a serving bowl, smoothing it out and cleaning off the edges, and add a swirl of olive oil or a garnish (for hummus that comes with a garnish, scoop it out and reserve for serving).
Types of Hummus
When you are shopping for hummus at the grocery store, most of the flavor variations are really just different toppings on plain hummus. But there are actually added ingredients that can change the flavor and/or texture of the hummus itself:
- Black bean hummus
- Lentil hummus
- Sweet potato hummus
- Red pepper hummus
- Green olive hummus
- Avocado hummus
- Chocolate hummus
