What’s A Mezze?
Mezze’s are basically a Mediterranean cheese board and they’re hands-down one of my favorite ways to eat. It’s a perfect starter for kebobs or a stand-alone meal with the girls. In Arabic, mezze translates to sharing and that’s exactly what these delicious spreads are meant for. A little bit of everything tucked into a delicious platter, meant to be enjoyed together.
Mezze platters (sometimes spelled meze) can vary depending on region. What’s served in Middle East vs. the Mediterranean vs. Turkey vs. Greece are all a bit different. Here’s a little helpful guide on Mezze ingredients. In more of an Italian mood? Try my Caprese Skewer Board and Antipasto Platter.
Choose Your Cheeses
While Mezzes can include meat like chicken or beef kebobs, I opted for a vegetarian version this time around. In place of meat, cheese offers a nice source of filling protein.
In this case, I went for marinated feta & goat cheese stuffed peppadews. Other options include Halloumi, Tulum cheese or Shanklish.
Select Your Dips
Dips might just be the most important part of this dish. They tie all the other ingredents together. Perfect for dipping both pita and veggies.
I focused on a classic hummus and creamy tzatziki. Note that I often like to have one dairy and one plant-based dip option in consideration of guests’ potential dietary restrictions.
Other popular greek or middle eastern dips include tahini (made from sesame seeds), baba ghannouj (made from eggplant), labneh (strained yogurt), moutabel (tahini + eggplant) and Turkish cacik (similar to tzatziki).
How to Build Your Platter
Here’s my Mediterranean mezze platter recipe:
- Start by placing your bowls (hummus, tzatziki & olives)
- Add in larger-scale items like the long cucumber slices, goat cheese stuffed peppadews, pita & radishes around the perimeter of the platter.
- Arrange items around the dip bowls. The dolmas, feta & tomatoes around the tzatziki. The tabbouleh & artichokes around the hummus.
- Add in figs halves to fill in any holes.
- Garnish dips: drizzle olive oil & roasted chickpeas on top of the hummus, then place parsley & a cucumber ribbon on the tzatziki.
