Having overnight guests? Treat them to a Build Your Own Waffle Board (BYOWB) in the morning!

What to Put on Your Waffles?

First, lay out all the essential toppings: maple syrup, whipped cream, and butter.

Then, add in your favorite seasonal fruits: berries are especially great on waffles.

For the kiwi flowers, I used these fun cookie-cutters. They’re made especially for cutting through produce. I can see cutting out shapes of so many different fruits for this. Make it fun!

I love a few unexpected items, like almond butter, chia seeds, and chocolate spread. I used chocolate hummus, but I know it’s a polarizing choice (some love it, some hate it). You could always use Nutella or the Chocolate Almond Spread from Trader Joe’s instead.

Many people like fruit preserves on their waffles—you could add in a jam in place of one of the fresh fruits.

How to Keep Waffles Warm?

I used frozen waffles for my board, though you can certainly make waffles from scratch if that’s your game.

Either way, you want to put the waffles out warm, so leave the toasting or making for the last minute.

If you have concerns about guests eating right away and keeping the waffles toasty, you can always devote the board to all the toppings and serve the waffles separately. For that, I suggest the following options:

  • Place waffles in a basket with a towel over them on the side
  • Grab a wire cooling rack and place it on top of a baking sheet. Set in a warm oven (225°). As your waffles are done place them on the wire rack. The oven will keep them warm, and the rack set-up will keep them warm but not overcooked. Do not stack waffles on top of each other, they will get soggy. This is also a great tip for keeping pancakes warm.
  • For smaller parties, you can have people toast their waffles individually.

Which Waffles?

I like to provide a mix of options. From traditional, to whole wheat to a fruity sweet option like blueberry. You can also be mindful of friends and family with dietary restrictions and set out gluten free waffles if your guests call for those.

What Size is this Board?

This board is 14in x 20in. Find similar wood boards in the SHOP THIS POST below. Remember to always check dimensions before you buy as some of these differ slightly.
