Common Cheese Dip Recipe FAQs
My best cheese dips usually blend 2–3 cheeses for the best flavor and texture combo.
Look for cheeses that are melty, some of my favorites include
– Cheddar – classic, sharp, and reliable
– Gruyère – nutty, melts like a dream (hello fondue vibes)
– Fontina – ultra-creamy and mild
– Monterey Jack – super melty, great base cheese
– Mozzarella – stretchy and mild (best mixed with others)
– Cream cheese – adds richness and stability
= Velveeta – not fancy, but basically impossible to mess up
Not all vegan cheeses melt well, I know from experience that these actually work.
– Cashew queso (homemade or store-bought) – creamy, tangy, dependable
– Miyoko’s Creamery – (a great brand) great for rich, cultured flavor
– Violife – melts smoothly, mild taste
– For a DIY option, you can blend a splash of plant-based milk (like coconut or hemp milk) with cornstarch for a silky finish.
I love a board with a variety of dippers and ways to mix and match flavors. Always try and add a variety of colors and textures.
– Cheese dip with cream cheese, pair with crackers, bagel chips, celery, carrots, smoked salmon or deli meat.
– Cheese dip with Velveeta (like spicy queso), pair with tortilla chips, grilled chicken or steak bites, bell peppers, French fries or tater tots.
– Cheese dip with Gruyère (like fondue or raclette), pair with crusty bread, baguette, roasted potatoes, mushrooms, apple slices, pears, pickles.
– Cheese dip with cheddar (like beer cheese), pair with soft pretzels, crackers, tortilla chips, broccoli or cauliflower, tomatoes, apple slices (trust it!).
– Cheese dip with mozzarella, pair with garlic bread, breadsticks, cherry tomatoes, salami or pepperoni slices.
It all depends on the flavor profile of the cheese you are using. Here are the best pairings I’ve found:
– Cheddar dips: IPA, cider, Sauvignon Blanc
– Gruyère dips: Chardonnay, lager, sparkling wine
– Spicy queso: margaritas, Mexican lager, Riesling
– Creamy dips: Champagne, Pinot Noir, iced tea with lemon
No shame in adding a shortcut to your snack platter! There are some great cheese dips out there. Some of my favorite places to shop for great dips are: Trader Joe’s, Aldi, and Whole Foods. Here are some of my favorite store-bought dips:
– Trader Joe’s Unexpected Cheddar Cheese Spread – technically a spread, but rich, sharp, and perfect for dipping (get a taste of it with my Easy Crostini Recipe).
– Trader Joe’s Pimento Cheese Dip – creamy, slightly tangy, and a classic crowd-pleaser you can’t go wrong with.
– Trader Joe’s White Queso Dip – smooth, mild, and easy to warm up for a quick queso moment.
– Trader Joe’s Ranch Cottage Cheese Dip – a high-protein option that’s very popular, though it doesn’t quite live up to the hype for me.
– Heluva Good! French Onion Dip – not a cheese dip, but ultra-creamy and always a hit on any snack board (I’ve partnered with the Heluva brand for years and use this dip constantly for hosting).
– Good Foods Nacho Cheeze (vegan queso) – tangy, dairy-free, and a great alternative if you loved the discontinued Siete version.
