Kid-Friendly Bunny Cheese Ball Easter Appetizer
This easy Easter appetizer was inspired by sweet versions I’ve seen on the internet, so I wanted to make a savory version with my favorite cheese ball recipe (it’s the same one as my Snowman Cheese Ball!).
Ingredients
- 16 ounces cream cheese, softened
- 2 cups Italian cheese blend*
- 1 teaspoon minced fresh chives
- 1/2 teaspoon chopped fresh parsley
- 1/4 teaspoon chopped fresh rosemary
- 1/8 teaspoon garlic powder
- 2 cups grated Parmesan
- 3 to 4 easter egg radishes
- 8 radish flowers, for serving
- Baby carrots, for serving
- Golden Butter Butterfly Crackers, for serving
Instructions
1. In a medium bowl, combine the cream cheese, Italian cheese blend, chives, parsley, rosemary, and garlic powder.
2. Push the cheese into the center of the bowl and form into a ball. Cover the bowl with parchment paper or plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least one hour or up to overnight.
3. Separate the chilled mixture into four pieces, one large one for the body, two medium balls for the paws, and one small ball for the tail. Use your hands to roll them into balls, then shape the two medium balls into soft triangles.
4. Place the Parmesan in a bowl. Working one at a time, roll the cheese “balls” in the Parmesan (or pat the cheese onto the cheese balls).
5. Stack the smallest ball on top of the biggest ball to place the tail, then add the triangles, short side down, on the front of the large ball.
6. Slice the ends of the smaller easter radishes to create 6 small toe pads and slice the ends off of a larger easter radish to create 2 foot pads. Place the large foot pads in the center of the triangles, then add three toe pads underneath each foot pad. (Pro tip: Use extra cream cheese to adhere radishes to “paws.”)
7. Serve in the center of a platter and arrange the radish flowers, carrots, and Butterfly crackers around the edges.
*NOTE: If you can’t find a bag of Italian Style Shredded Cheese Blend, combine ½ cup shredded mozzarella, ½ cup shredded parmesan, ¼ cup shredded asiago, ¼ cup shredded fontina, ¼ cup shredded provolone.
Make Radish Flowers for Easter in 3 Easy Steps
These radish flowers are perfect for spring and add an extra fresh feel to this Easter board! You’ll need breakfast radishes, which are longer and skinnier than normal radishes, to get this beautiful flower effect.
- Remove all but one of the stems from each radish to give it a single-stem flower appearance.
- Slice each radish 6 times, only going about ¾ of the way down, then turn and slice 6 times again, also only going ¾ of the way down, to create a crosshatch pattern.
- Soak in ice water until the slices bloom outwards. You might also need to gently fan them out to get the desired effect.
Bunny Butt Cheese Ball Easter Appetizer Step-By-Step
- Combine the cream cheese, Italian cheese blend, chives, parsley, rosemary, and garlic powder. Form the cheese into a ball. Cover and refrigerate for at least one hour.
- Separate into 4 balls: one large one for the body, two medium balls for the paws, and one small ball for the tail. Shape the two medium balls into soft triangles.
- Roll the cheese “balls” in the Parmesan.
- Create the bunny butt: Stack the smallest ball on top of the biggest ball, then add the triangles on the front. Slice the radishes to create 6 small toe pads and 2 foot pads. Place the triangles in front.
- Place on a platter and surround with radish flowers.
- Finish by adding carrots & Golden Butter Butterfly Crackers.
10 Alternate Ingredient Ideas for Bunny Cheese Balls
I love all the fresh herbs in these cheese balls, it really adds to the spring-time flavors, but there are so many additional mix-in options that would also taste amazing in cream cheese!
For other savory flavors, try:
- Crumbled bacon & fresh chives
- Pesto & parmesan
- Chopped pickled pimentos & cheddar (sort of like my pimento cheese dip)
- Chopped jalapeno, cheddar, & crumbled bacon
- Chopped pickles, cheddar & fresh dill
- Basil & lemon zest
If you want to go for a sweet cheese ball, swap the radish flowers to strawberry roses and the crackers and carrots for cookies and more fruit! Try:
- Chopped strawberries & confectioner’s sugar, coated in crushed graham crackers
- Chocolate syrup, confectioner’s sugar, & Oreos, coated in chocolate chips (see my chocolate cheese ball recipe here!)
- Sprinkles, confectioner’s sugar, and vanilla, coated in sprinkles
- Crushed Oreos & confectioner’s sugar, coated in crushed Oreos
Note: All these ideas won’t make white bunnies, but if that’s the vibe you want, feel free to use shredded coconut on the outside instead of what I suggested!
For vegan cheese balls, it’s best to stick with savory flavors! Try swapping the cream cheese for:
- Tofutti Cream Cheese
- Violife Cream Cheese
- Philadelphia Plant-Based Cream Cheese
You could also serve Daiya Dairy Free Strawberry Cream Cheese or Boursin Dairy-Free Cheese Spread on the side as vegan dips!
The Best Easter Beverage Pairings
Whether you drink alcohol or not, I always think a party is better with a fun drink! Try out one of these festive beverages:
Alcoholic
- Bloody Mary’s (try my Bloody Mary Bar!)
- Prosecco or sparkling wine
- Whiskey Sour (there’s egg white in here!)
- Easter Mimosas
- Peeptinis or Cadbury Creme Martinis (for the Easter candy lovers!)
- Peach Bellinis
- Mint Juleps
Non-alcoholic
- Lemonade
- Iced tea
- Curious No. 9 Nonalcoholic Sparkling Rosé Cocktail
- Easter Brunch Punch
FAQs
About 1 to 2 ounces per person is a good rule of thumb, but I always find that it’s better to have too much than too little! This recipe would serve 18 to 24 people.
If you’re not a fan of radishes, you can swap the bunny paws for anything that can be made small and round! I suggest pepperoni, carrot slices, red bell pepper, or tomatoes to keep it savory.
For the radish flowers, you can make rosettes out of shaved carrots, strawberry roses, or salami rosettes if you want to include some meat.
The purpose of the coating is mostly to keep the cheese balls together, but it also helps create the “furry” white bunny look. If you’re not a fan of Parmesan, then you can try other similar cheeses (like Grana Padano, Asiago, and Pecorino Romano) or even a white cheddar.
If you’re looking to get away from extra cheese altogether, panko bread crumbs or crushed crackers can make for a light brown bunny. Otherwise, traditional cheese ball coatings, like herbs and nuts, might not work here because the bunny would end up green or brown.
I love the idea of a big Easter spread! This bunny butt is an adorable centerpiece; serve these on the side:
– Deviled eggs
– Boursin “Carrots” Appetizer”
– Cobb Salad Platter
– Crudite Platter
– Fresh Fruit Platter
– Easter Candy Dessert Board
You can make and form these cheese balls up to 1 month ahead! That’s how long they will stay fresh in an airtight container in the freezer. In the fridge, they will last up to 5 days.
Yes! Make and shape the balls and chill thoroughly. Wait to coat and assemble the balls until you arrive! The radish flowers actually benefit from soaking in water, so make them before transporting and store them in a container with clean water until ready to serve.
The mild flavor is a crowd-pleaser for kids and adults alike, and so is the fun shape! Plus, you could make it interactive and have kids help make the cheese ball!
